“What you heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus.” 2 Timothy 1:13 New International Version (NIV)

Second Timothy is one of Paul’s Pastoral letters written to Timothy. Paul warns Timothy to confront false teachers. An interesting note. Timothy met Paul in Lystra. It was Paul’s first missionary journey. Timothy is from mixed background. His mother was a believing Jew and his father was a pagan Greek. These Pastoral letters arrive to Timothy when he becomes a senior figure in the church in Ephesus.

In the second letter Paul writes to encourage and strengthen Timothy’s confidence in the Gospel. He encourages him to accept the great responsibility of preaching Christ Jesus.

When I was in college, I would listen to what the professor was teaching but I did not always agree with what was taught. So then, the questions began. Now some of my professors were very open to such dialog and others wanted nothing to do with it.

I taught my children to question their teachers as well. My son was known to question test answers and what was spoken. Again, most appreciated his intellect and thought process and then there were some who felt that their authority had been questioned.

I believe that is what we are called to do. Question. In this questioning, we dig a bit deeper in to what we hear and what we believe, standing on a firm foundation of truth in the One true God.

This questioning helps us to analyze the teaching and develop our faith and love in Christ Jesus.

Father, help me to recognize good and solid teaching. Help me to stand firm on Your truth building my strong faith and deep love for You Christ Jesus. Amen
