Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Matthew 29:19

The Great Commission. I can’t imagine what the disciples were thinking at this point. They knew their time with Jesus was coming to an end and I imagine they were hanging on to every last word. We all focus on those special “lasts.” That last wave as you drop your kids off at college, the last kiss with your husband or wife before they leave, or the last words a loved one shares before they pass away. We try to make these things affectionate, but most importantly we want to make them count!

This is Jesus’ last earthly message to the disciples. GO MAKE DISCIPLES…But go where? I have had the amazing opportunity to travel on several mission trips in my life. It is always inspiring to help build schools in less privileged areas or deliver food, clothes, and supplies to families in need over the holidays. But my favorite part of these trips is when I get to sit down and build a relationship with the people we are there to serve. I pray that they would see a small part of God’s love for them through me. It is easy when you are on a mission trip to feel inspired to share God’s message. You are focused on that particular task. But why can’t I do the same in my everyday life?

Many translations of this verse read “as you go” rather than “therefore go.” We don’t have to be on a special mission trip to accomplish this command. We are called to make disciples as we go in our everyday lives. Make disciples at work, at school, on your sports team. Share God’s word with them. Invite them to come along with you to church on Sunday. Share the promise of Baptism and the blessing of forgiveness through Jesus’ death and resurrection. It doesn’t have to happen all at once. It takes time. But we are called! We are called ever day to make disciples.

Father, You call us to make disciples in this world, but so often we put this task aside. We are afraid or overwhelmed. Help keep my heart focused and give me the courage to reach out to someone who may not know You. Lord, give me the words to say, so that they may know Your love. Amen.
