“Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through it. A man was there named Zacchaeus... He was trying to see Who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was short... He ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to see Jesus... When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, ‘Zacchaeus, hurry and come down; for I must stay at your house today...” Luke 19:1-11 Cathy Linker

Let’s start with remembering yesterday. God does not look on the outward appearance, “but God looks on the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7)

“I must stay with you today.” That’s what Jesus said to Zacchaeus. “I must stay with you.” “I want to stay with you.” “I am drawn to stay with you.” “I’m compelled to stay with you.”

Zacchaeus was short. Zacchaeus was a tax collector. He was a Roman collaborator, unethical and a cheat. He took advantage of his position to extort money and direct it into his personal account. In a word, Zacchaeus was a “sinner.” One of the worst kinds. He was short in stature and short in honor along with most everything else. Write him off as lost.

“People look on the outside, but God looks on the heart.” But surely, we know the kind of heart Zacchaeus had gaging by the behavior don’t we? Evidently God knew better. Evidently God knew a heart transplant was possible. Or as Luke Skywalker said to his father, Darth Vader, “there is good inside you.” (Star Wars—Episode VI) Jesus knew Zacchaeus deep down.

“I am staying at your house Zach, come on down!” Zacchaeus hadn’t even invited Jesus in! But Jesus decided he would invite Himself in. The faith that seeks Jesus, the faith that climbs a tree to see Jesus, the faith that receives Jesus, the faith that holds on to Jesus is created by the coming and the presence of Jesus.

Sometimes, we don’t even know we have faith until it just springs out of us. But Jesus knows it’s there and Jesus calls it out of us.

I love this sentence. Say it out loud with your name in it:

“_____________, I must stay at your house today!”
