Living Faith Perseveres

“Now the woman was a gentile, of Syrophoenician origin. She begged Jesus to cast the demon out of her daughter…” Mark 7:26

Two things stand out to me in this story. (At least two things) First, this woman was not an Israelite. Since Jesus had cross the border for His “get away” there is no real surprise here. It would be like going to Montana and being surprised the person waiting on you was not a Cardinal fan. But it turns out, even though her origin was not of the “chosen people,” she nevertheless worshipped Jesus as she approached Him. She called out for God to touch their lives. She saw in Jesus the connection with God which had called forth faith. That’s the first thing.

The second thing that stands out to me is her persistence. She keeps praying and claiming the mercy and the power of God even though she was an “outsider.” How is it that she discerned in Jesus the truth that “God shows no partiality”? (Acts 2: 21; Romans 2:11) How is it that she had a living faith which led her to persistent prayer?

I believe that God’s Spirit creates the living faith in us that reaches out to God.

I believe God’s Spirit creates the living faith that seeks after God.

I believe the Spirit of God helps us to pray even when we don’t have the words. (Romans 8:26)

I am sure that even when we don’t see an answer to our prayers the Spirit of God keeps us persistent and connected.

I believe there are no borders when it comes to faithful expressions in response to the presence of God in our lives.

Open our eyes, Lord. Open our eyes that we may see and recognize living, vital faith when it is being expressed by people around us. And help us Lord to encourage and respond to that faith when we have the opportunity.
