Faith From Above

“These conflicts and disputes among you, where do they come from? Do they not come from your cravings that are at war within you?” James 4:1

Conflicts and disputes. There are more than enough of those to go around. Interestingly, when James talks about these he does not point outside of us, but rather in. He proposed that the conflicts and disputes we experience in community begin inside of us. What? How am I responsible? Isn’t it always ‘their’ fault? “

St Paul in the letter to the Romans (Chapter 7) agrees with James that there is a war going on inside of us that causes the outside conflicts in which we engage. Do we fall short of tolerance? Look inside! Are we unable to speak civilly with others? Look inside. Do we find ourselves easily offended? Look inside.

When I honestly look at the inside of me I can see how my outward behaviors and relationships are impacted by what’s going on in there. I realize I need to kneel down to pray, “Lord, have mercy.” I need to examine my tender spots, my hurting places, my fears and scars from the past. It’s a courageous thing to look inside first. But it is necessary.

“The wisdom from above is pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to compromise, full of mercy and good fruits, without a trace of partiality or hypocrisy.” James 3:7

So, we pray: Lord, I want less conflict and discord in my world. Please give me Your wisdom from above. Grant to me a purity of motive. Fill me with a peaceful and gentle spirit. Give me an understanding of the most important things. Please, Lord, fill me with a willingness to find common ground with others. Fill me with Your mercy and the fruit of love which will enable me to live with integrity, speak with authenticity and treat all people in a way that is consistent with Your grace.
