Faithful Submission

“Submit yourselves therefore to the Lord.” James 4:7

Submit. Now there’s a word of instruction from God that is hard to fulfill. Because at the center of our sinful selves is the refusal to submit. Not to God. Not to others.

Submit. Consider how the story of sin begins with a refusal by the man and the woman in the garden of Eden. They refuse to submit to the Lordship of God. “Who is God to tell you what you can or can’t do?” whispers the tempter. “If you choose for yourself you will be god!” And so begins the sad history of our fall from God’s peaceful presence. One of the additional consequences of our fall from God is the inability to live peacefully with each other.

Submit. God’s will for us is good. God’s will for us is life. “Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105) Submit. Think of Jesus “Who did not regard equality with God a thing to be exploited, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant… Therefore, God highly exalted Him and gave Him the Name that is above every other name, so that at the Name of Jesus every knee should bend…” (Philippians 2:6, 9-10) Jesus submitted to the Father’s will.

Submit. When John the Baptizer said, “I need to be baptized by You and do you come to me now?” But Jesus was submitting to the Father, so He said, “… it is proper for us in this way to fulfill all righteousness.” (Matthew 3:14-15)

Submit. When Jesus taught His disciples to pray He gave them these words for our faithful submission, “Your Kingdom come, Your will be done…” (Matthew 6:10)

Submit. We sing it: “My faith looks up to Thee, Thou, Lamb of Calvary. Savior Divine!”

Submit. That’s what following Jesus is all about! It begins with submission. Can you submit to the love of God? Can you submit to God’s will for your life?

Submit. Lord, give me a willing spirit. Help me to bend my knee to Your Holy Name and to Your will for my life.
