Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming. As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”
This letter from Peter was written to believers in the Roman provinces. He heard they were being persecuted for their beliefs and wrote to encourage them to be strong in their faith. Most of these believers were Gentiles who had not known God. When Peter reminds them to not “conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance”, he was urging them to live in the new light of Jesus who they now knew. They were to not go back to their earlier sinful lives because they now knew better.
This is such a good reminder for us today. So often we get overwhelmed by the world and all its problems. There are times when we fall back into behaviors that do not glorify God. Peter is reminding us to stay alert and not conform to the ways of the world. We know better and when we remember that, through the grace of God we are made holy, we can be holy. It is our duty as followers of Christ to exemplify holiness in the world. By doing so we will make disciples of all people, according to God’s will.
Dear Lord, please help us to stay alert and remember that we belong to you. Help us to follow your ways and help others follow as well. In Jesus’s name we pray, Amen.
