For so is the will of God, that by doing good you would muzzle the ignorance of foolish men;

I heard of a celebrity telling a story about how he’s not a very nice person, but he married another celebrity who is very sweet. He told of an incident at a restaurant when another diner was unkind and how he wanted to respond in kind. Instead, his wife asked for the other check to be sent to them, and they paid for the dinner of the unkind diner. The person who had been rude was so humbled that they left in shame. He referred to his wife’s act as being meaner than anything he could have done.

I don’t know whether that celebrity couple are Christians. I’m certainly not saying that we should use kindness to cause others to feel shame. I do think, however, that the world can be so unaccustomed to good acts according to the will of God, that they will be left speechless upon their receipt. How do you talk about what you don’t even understand?

Lord, I pray for the discernment to step boldly into the works You have prepared for us to walk in (Ephesians 2:10) that the Gospel might shine on a world shrouded in ignorance. Amen.
