16 He reached down from on high and took hold of me;

he drew me out of deep waters.

17 He rescued me from my powerful enemy,

from my foes, who were too strong for me.

18 They confronted me in the day of my disaster,

but the Lord was my support.

19 He brought me out into a spacious place;

he rescued me because he delighted in me.

 

Psalm 18:1-19 is a powerful song of praise where King David thanks God for delivering him from his enemies and the shadow of death. He vividly describes God as his mighty fortress, soaring down in a dramatic, earth-shaking storm to rescue him from overwhelming trouble. He sang to the Lord the words of this song when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul.

I chose to publish only the last four verses of this Psalm for today’s devotion, but the first 15 verses have some powerful verbiage. It starts like this:

1 I love you, Lord, my strength.

2 The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer;

my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge,

my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.

 

How can we apply Psalm 18 to our lives today? I believe by praising God, thanking Him for all He has done in our lives and by proclaiming to others our deep love for God, describing Him as our rock, shield and stronghold.

Dear Lord, David describes how You drew him out of the deep waters and rescued him from his powerful enemies. Help me to have the same faith in You. Give me the words to describe Your love and saving grace to those I encounter today. Amen.
