24 Now there came to Ephesus a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria. He was an eloquent man, well versed in the scriptures. 25 He had been instructed in the Way of the Lord; and he spoke with burning enthusiasm and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus, though he knew only the baptism of John. 26 He began to speak boldly in the synagogue; but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained the Way of God more accurately. 27 And when he wished to cross over to Achaia, the believers encouraged him and wrote to the disciples to welcome him. On his arrival he greatly helped those who through grace had become believers. 28 for he powerfully refuted the Jews in public, showing by the scriptures that the Messiah is Jesus.

 

Have you ever felt like you knew a lot about something only to find out that you were missing crucial facts? A good friend of mine in elementary school was a very verbally proficient reader from an early age. Debbie was so excited about reading that she would often volunteer to read aloud to the class. The problem was that she didn’t comprehend all that she read. The teacher worked with Debbie and her verbal proficiency went on to be a true mastery of anything she read.

 

That page from early childhood rang true when thinking about Apollos and his excitement to spread the Gospel. He was well versed and eager to share all that he had learned with others. Priscilla and Aquila were devout and also well educated in the Way of God. They gently mentored Apollos so that he was able to thrive and be more precise in spreading the information to people who were eager to know about Jesus. Their patience and encouragement to Apollos was critical to spreading Christianity.

 

Dear Lord, Make us good mentors, teachers, and ministers in the places you put us throughout our lifetimes. Continue to open our hearts and minds to more accurately spread your love and Gospel to a world in need. Amen
