Then King David went in and sat before the Lord, and he said: “Who am I Sovereign Lord, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? And as if this were not enough in your sight, Sovereign Lord, you have also spoken about the future of the house of your servant-and this decree, Sovereign Lord, is for a mere human! What more can David say to you? For you know your servant, Sovereign Lord. For the sake of your word and according to your will, you have done this great thing and made it known to your servant. How great you are, Sovereign Lord! There is no one like you, and there is no God but you, as we have heard with our own ears.”
David has asked Nathan, the prophet, why he should not build a beautiful temple for God, when he himself lives in opulence. At first, Nathan told him to go ahead and do it. But then God came to Nathan that night and revealed that David would not build the temple, but his offspring would. He also promised that his kingdom would last forever and that, though this son would sin and be punished, God would never take His love away from him.
This prayer of David was in response to this incredible news. You can tell how in awe David was of what he had heard. He was once just a shepherd boy, but God had lifted him up over all his enemies to be the king of His chosen people. You can tell by his words how humbled and blessed he feels. He is full of praise for God, calling him Sovereign Lord over and over. He knows that what has happened to him and his family in the past was not of his own doing, but that of the Sovereign Lord’s. He almost can’t believe what God has planned for the future of his family.
This is yet another example showing that God can do anything, in any circumstance. I know that I am constantly in a state of wonder when I see what God is doing in the world and in my life. I see how he carries me through the hard times and opens my eyes to the beauty around me. I am humbled, much like David, to see what he has done in my life, and I am excited to see what he has planned for my future. God is so good….all the time!
Dear Lord, we wonder at your unbelievable love for us. Let us always rejoice at the grace and mercy you show us at all times and in all places. Amen
