2 God also said to Moses, “I am the Lord. 3 I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob as God Almighty, but by my name the Lord. I did not make myself fully known to them. 4 I also established my covenant with them to give them the land of Canaan, where they resided as foreigners. 5 Moreover, I have heard the groaning of the Israelites, whom the Egyptians are enslaving, and I have remembered my covenant.

6 “Therefore, say to the Israelites: ‘I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. I will free you from being slaves to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with mighty acts of judgment. 7 I will take you as my own people, and I will be your God. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God, who brought you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. 8 And I will bring you to the land I swore with uplifted hand to give to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob. I will give it to you as a possession. I am the Lord.’”

9 Moses reported this to the Israelites, but they did not listen to him because of their discouragement and harsh labor.

We’ve all heard the term “when it rains, it pours.” It is easy to feel like God has abandoned us when everything seems to be falling apart around us. I recently watched a movie where a man lost his teenage daughter and his wife within a tragically short time. As you can imagine, he felt depressed and alone. One of his friends invited him to attend church together and he responded that God hadn’t showed up for him recently and that church was the last place he wanted to be. Thankfully, God continued to show up through the people in his community and the man found a way out of the darkness.

I imagine this is how the Israelites felt, lonely and abandoned, but God always shows up. No matter how many times His people lose their way and turn their back on Him, God shows up. He meets us in the darkness and delivers us from the bonds of doubt and disbelief. When it seems like there is no light at the end of the tunnel, we are reminded to put our faith in God. Keep your eyes and ears open for where God is working in your life. It may not be how you expect. It may be in a call or text from a friend or an opportunity to serve that may be exactly what you need (even if you don’t recognize it at the time).

Lord, I am sorry for doubting you in my moments of weakness. Help me to trust in your promises and be open to the ways you are working to bring me out of the darkness. Amen
