The next day he (John the Baptizer) saw Jesus coming to him and said, Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! This is He of whom I said, A man is coming after me who has become ahead of me, because He was before me. And I did not know Him, but in order that He might be manifested to Israel, for this reason I came baptizing in water. And John testified, saying, I beheld the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and He abode upon Him.
And I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize in water, He said to me, He upon whom you see the Spirit descending and abiding upon Him, this is He who baptizes in the Holy Spirit. And I have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God. Again the next day John was standing with two of his disciples, And looking at Jesus walking, he said, Behold, the Lamb of God! And the two disciples heard him speak this, and they followed Jesus.
My husband’s favorite movie is The Gospel of John. John the Baptizer looks a little extreme in the movie. The power of the Holy Spirit was definitely upon him. Otherwise, I think they would have put him away. Instead, he gained followers.
In Acts 17:6, Christians were referred to as the people who had turned the world upside down. In Acts 26:24, Festus accused Pau of being crazy.
We should look different and stand out as not being like the rest of the world. People may think we’re crazy but it they look long enough; they will want to follow the One who we follow.
Father in Heaven, may we follow the pattern of the ones who have gone before us and be a beacon of truth to a world wrapped in lies. Amen.
