Peter Declares That Jesus Is the Messiah
13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”
14 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
15 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”
16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon, son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. 18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be[c] bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”
These verses give us, mere mortals, a great introduction to Heaven and the Holy Spirit. Imagine the joy that Peter felt when Jesus declared “Blessed are You”, because Peter knew his fate was sealed. Jesus confirmed that his faith was so strong that he would be the example that all believers referenced and relied on when the going here got tough.
Today we face many challenges to grow our faith. Daily there are news stories and doubtful people all around us. These worldly distracters may get in the way of prayer and worship. These elements are meant to dissuade us from our belief and cause us anxiety. I caution many young people just to get up out of bed, say a prayer of thanksgiving for your nights rest and ask for help for the coming day. If we just practice this faith building exercise, no matter your struggle that day, you will be a success because you are a child of the most high God.
Let us Pray: Father thank you for the gift of living with you in eternity. Help us to see you every day so we can worship and praise you for all your bountiful blessings and help. Thank you for Peter and church, for they give us an example and place to gather with all your people. Amen.
