1 The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming—not the realities themselves. For this reason it can never, by the same sacrifices repeated endlessly year after year, make perfect those who draw near to worship. 2 Otherwise, would they not have stopped being offered? For the worshipers would have been cleansed once for all and would no longer have felt guilty for their sins. 3 But those sacrifices are an annual reminder of sins. 4 It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.
This chapter of Hebrews begins by explaining the Old Testament means of reconciliation for the forgiveness of sins, to comparing Jesus’ ultimate sacrifice for us that completely wipes away our sins. These verses illustrate (shadowed) that the Israelites would bring their rituals or animals yearly to wipe away their sins, only to repeat this year after year. It was a reminder of their sins each year. It did not remove their sin, it only covered it up. Not good works, not following rules or rituals, but I urge you to read on in Hebrew 10 as the new covenant is made: vs 8-18, for our complete forgiveness through the Lord’s sacrifice for us.
Heavenly Father thank you for Jesus and Your new covenant to save me. Cleanse me from my sins and fill me with Your spirit to follow You every day in my life. I pray this in Your name Jesus. Amen.
