A Psalm of David. LORD, who may dwell in your sacred tent? Who may live on your holy mountain? The one whose walk is blameless, who does what is righteous, who speaks the truth from their heart; whose tongue utters no slander, who does no wrong to a neighbor, and casts no slur on others; who despises a vile person but honors those who fear the LORD; who keeps an oath even when it hurts, and does not change their mind; who lends money to the poor without interest; who does not accept a bribe against the innocent. Whoever does these things will never be moved.
As I read David’s list of requirements to qualify to be in God’s presence and to live with God for eternity, I realize just how far short I fall and how impossible it is for anyone to achieve. David is writing this from a merit based, Old Covenant viewpoint which is what he knew to be true. Sacrifices could be made to atone for failure, but blessings were based more on obedience to rules.
Thankfully we live under the New Covenant that Jesus provided, as the perfect sacrifice for our sins, by his death on the cross. Under the New Covenant, faith, rather than obedience, is the basis for salvation. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.” (Romans 3:23-24).
Thank God for His grace! Then what about David’s list? I believe this list is still important now and in the future. It could be summarized as living as Jesus did, in right standing with God His father, with moral integrity. When we walk in the Light daily, following Jesus’ example, our relationship with God grows closer, our faith grows stronger and our actions flow outward into right living with others in the world. We will be sharing God’s presence inside us with the world and “Never be moved.” (vs 5).
Heavenly Father, Thank you for allowing us into Your presence. Thank you for the Holy Spirit that dwells within us. Help us as we strive to follow Your Son’s example of righteousness and moral integrity. Let others see You through us and draw nearer to You by our examples. In Jesus name we pray. Amen
