Peace, I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
“You heard me say, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’ If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe.
You may have had a stressful few months at work and decide it time to take a vacation. You book a ticket to some tropical paradise and are convinced this will finally bring you some peace and quiet. It never fails, your flight home is delayed, you miss your connection, you come home to find some new mess and suddenly, the peace and quiet you found on vacation is long gone. The truth is a vacation may give us a little breather, but it is not really what our hearts need. We need something more- the peace that only Christ can give.
The peace Jesus promises means having hearts and minds that are whole and undisturbed. We can rest assured and not be afraid, knowing God is in control. This is an out-of-this-world peace that Scripture describes as surpassing all human understanding (Philippians 4:7). We are assured our minds will be kept in this perfect peace when we put our faith in God.
Are you carrying around fears or doubt in your heart or mind? We will never find true peace on our own with earthly things. Take your troubles to Jesus. He sees. He hears. He listens. He alone can provide serenity for your soul.
Lord, forgive me for looking for peace from the world rather than from You. Thank You for the true peace You give me through Jesus. May it penetrate my mind, keeping my heart from feeling troubled or afraid. Amen
