Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?”

God said to Moses, “I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to you.”

God also said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you.’

“This is my name forever; the name you shall call me from generation to generation.”

What’s in a name? In scripture, a person’s name often signifies his character or ability or mission — especially when the name is given by God. There are several examples of God changing a person's name to exemplify the plan He has for them.

God does not choose names for himself at random, say for the sound or for an ancestor or to avoid embarrassing nicknames. He chose a name for the sake of revealing things about himself and what he intends to do. God makes it clear that he is committed to being with his people, being whatever they need.

We are all given a name at birth, but we tend to give ourselves new names or titles as life goes on. We often let regret or defeat define us, but one of my favorite song writers reminds us that we have been called children of God. We have been saved, and we have been set free. Whatever you have or haven’t done in your life, do not let it define you. God calls us his own. He has a plan for you and will be walking by your side every step of the way. I leave you with the lyrics from Matthew West’s, “Hello, my name is” I also highly recommend his book for a quick easy read.

Hello, my name is child of the One True King

I've been saved, I've been changed, I have been set free

Amazing grace is the song I sing

Hello, my name is child of the One True King

Amen
