False Teachers and Their Destruction
1 But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves. 2 Many will follow their depraved conduct and will bring the way of truth into disrepute. 3 In their greed these teachers will exploit you with fabricated stories. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping.
Over my lifetime I have read about false teachers of the word who destroyed themselves and many people who followed them. The caution in these verses is real. The Devil is hard at work to keep us away from God. How do we safeguard ourselves and those we love from falling into a trap that would lead us away from God?
I believe that we must establish a personal relationship with God. Daily prayer is a good place to start. Norman Vincent Peale was a great churchman of the 20th century. Dr Peale believed and prescribed daily prayer as the way to know Jesus so you could live in harmony with God here on Earth. When we combine daily prayer with daily study of the Bible it is difficult for the Devil to tempt and lure us away from Jesus and his promises.
So today at the dinner table I will say a prayer to thank God for his gifts of life, food, happiness and care from my friends and family, and I will ask him to help me be a better man tomorrow then I was today. I believe that God answers prayer if we just take the time to pray.
Let us pray: Father thank-you for our lives, our families, your churches and all the good people you have around us. Help us to see your blessings and love so we can tell others how magnificent you are. Amen.
