The cross is one of the most recognizable symbols in the world of the Christian faith. It reveals the heart of God. In John 3:13–17, Jesus reminds Nicodemus of the bronze serpent Moses lifted in the wilderness. Those who looked upon it in faith were healed. In the same way, Jesus would be lifted up on the cross so that all who look to Him in faith might receive eternal life.
The cross is where God’s justice and mercy meet. It exposes the depth of our sin while proclaiming the immeasurable depth of God's love. The words we know so well from John 3:16 remind us that God did not act out of obligation but out of love. He gave His only Son so that we would not perish but have everlasting life.
Holy Cross Day invites us to lift our eyes again to Christ crucified. When we wonder if God truly loves us, the cross answers with an resounding "yes." Today, fix your eyes on Jesus. The cross is not just a reminder of what Christ endured; it is the lasting sign of God's love, grace, and mercy for you.
Dear Jesus, thank you for bearing the cross for my salvation. Keep my eyes fixed on you and help me live each day in the confidence of your forgiving love. May the message of the cross shape my heart and lead me. In your Son’s name. Amen.
