The Mission of the Twelve
5 These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Do not take a road leading to Gentiles, and do not enter a Samaritan town, 6 but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 7 As you go, proclaim the good news, The kingdom of heaven has come near. 8 Cure the sick; raise the dead; cleanse those with a skin disease; cast out demons. You received without payment; give without payment.
When Jesus sent out the twelve, He gave them a clear mission: Go… proclaim the good news.
These words remind me that discipleship is not passive. We are sent - into our families, neighborhoods, and workplaces - to carry Christ’s love and hope into a world that hungers for it.
Everything we share flows first from what we have been given. Forgiveness, grace, healing, and life itself are gifts from God - gifts we could never earn. Because His mercy is free, our service can be generous. Whether through a kind word, a listening ear, or a helping hand, we join Jesus’ mission each time we give without counting the cost. Freely we have received; freely let us give.
Gracious Lord, You have given us life, forgiveness, and hope as free gifts of Your love. Send us out with willing hearts to share Your grace with others. Open our eyes to those in need, and strengthen us to serve with joy, trusting that You go with us. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
