7 As John’s disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind? 8 If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings’ palaces. 9 Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 10 This is the one about whom it is written: “‘I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.’ 11 Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
In this notable section of Matthew, Jesus is speaking to the crowds, after his disciples leave, of his admiration of John, best known as John the Baptist. Jesus defends John against potential doubts, explaining he is a strong man and prophet who prepared the way for Jesus. Jesus stated that no one greater than John has been born but the least on earth is greater than he. (Matthew 11:11)
John acquired his virtue by the actions of baptism he performed in the area of the lower Jordan river valley. John is probably the most significant figures in the Gospels with above all himself baptizing Jesus! John’s life on earth was more than just baptizing. John’s adult life was characterized by devotion and surrender to Jesus Christ and His kingdom. He was considered a forerunner for Jesus, going into areas and speaking of the works of Jesus. In the Bible, a "forerunner" has a main meaning of a person who prepares the way for another: a scout or herald who goes ahead to make the path safe and accessible for those who will follow.
We may all be forerunners in small ways. We prepare a warm place for our family or someone in need, a nice meal for a friend who is ill, prepare a driveway for an elderly neighbor by shoveling the snow. I encourage you all to be a forerunner today!
Heavenly Father, we pray you will open our hearts to the needs of others and know you are calling us to help.
