1 The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, 2 Until the day in which he was taken up, after he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen: 3 To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God: 4 And, being assembled together with them commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard me. 5 For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.
The book of Acts is addressed to “Theophilus.” This name means “friend of God.” Some scholars think this name is used to stand for all who follow Jesus. Others believe Theophilus was a wealthy person, perhaps a Roman official who paid for the recording and copying of this work. Either way, the book is intended for a large audience. It is likely that the first readers of Acts were Gentiles and Jews living on the northern coast of the Mediterranean Sea.
The writer is highlighting Jesus’ earthly ministry as the beginning of the early church and that his work will continue through the Holy Spirit. Jesus instructs the apostles to wait in Jerusalem for the “promise of the Father,” which is the baptism of the Holy Spirit. This promise was meant to give them power and prepare them for their mission.
Just as Jesus promised the apostles the gift of the Holy Spirit to be witnesses to all nations, so too has that great commission been given to each of us. I don’t know about you, but I find that I faulter all along the way in my daily living without the blessing of the Holy Spirit, supporting, guiding and loving me. Just as those first apostles were instructed to spread the Good News of Christ’s love with others those centuries ago, we too are called to do the same. The question for me is, “How do I do that each day?”
Let us pray. Dear Father, “I want to hear you.” “I want to see you.” What a blessing you have given us to be able to do that through the Holy Spirit. Help us to share with others the great gift you have given us Amen
