1 O LORD, my heart is not lifted up, my eyes are not raised too high; I do not occupy myself with things too great and too marvelous for me. 2 But I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother; my soul is like the weaned child that is with me.
3 O Israel, hope in the LORD from this time on and for evermore.
The book of Psalms is a collection of sung poetic prayers which express a variety of emotions in diverse situations. Many are desperate cries to God for salvation or protection from violent enemies or dire circumstances. Others express exuberant praise for astounding feats of the Lord in their lives. Sometimes I have a hard time identifying with the fearful feelings express about “many foes” and “surrounded by deadly enemies” when I feel so blessed in my life.
However, Psalm 131 speaks to me. It seems to be a simple expression of a woman leading an ordinary life with humble trust in the security of God, the Father’s care. A weaned child is one that is not dependent on the mother for life but still has the surety of her support if needed. Her trust comes from the everlasting hope in the Lord. Thus, it is for me that sure faith in Jesus’ atoning blood gives me peace and security which for some people is not ordinary.
Dear Lord, I thank you for your love, care, and assurance in my life. May I have opportunities to share this hope with those who feel so hopeless. Amen
